MEMORY BURIED BENEATH THE SURFACE. ARCHAEOLOGY OF WESTERPLATTE
The exhibition narrative focuses on archaeological discoveries related to the history of this area and the camp for Polish civilian prisoners organized by the Germans after the fighting at Westerplatte ended. The curators’ goal is to make the audience aware that Westerplatte is not only a peninsula heroically defended by a small group of Polish soldiers but also a site of German crimes against Polish civilians.
The exhibition also emphasizes the symbolic significance of Westerplatte as the place where World War II began. It presents the history of the peninsula from the 17th century to the early 1940s, highlighting the daily life at Westerplatte and the difficult and responsible service of Polish soldiers in the face of the growing hatred of Germans towards any signs of Polish identity in the Free City of Gdańsk.
